Maxalt falls under a class of medications known as triptans and exert their activity by increasing the sensitivity of the brain to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is responsible for contraction of blood vessels. This medication relieves strain on the brain that causes migraine headaches.

Contraindications:

Don't take this medication if you:

  • Have migraines that is a reason for weakness on one side of your body
  • Have migraines as a result of any illness in your brain stem
  • Have ischemic heart disease or other associated cardiovascular disorder
  • Have high blood pressure that is uncontrolled
  • Have coronary artery vasospasm
  • Have a history of transient ischemic attack or stroke

Drug Interactions:

Maxalt tablet should not be taken if you're taking any of the mentioned medications:

  • Other triptans such as Naratriptan), Zolmitriptan
  • Ergotamines like Ergotamine, Dihydroergotamine
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors such as Isocarboxazid, Phenelzine
  • Medications for Parkinson’s disease like Selegiline, Rasagiline
  • Herbal supplement (St. John's wort)

Storage conditions:

  • Store Maxalt tablet at room temperature clear of harsh conditions like excessive moisture, light or heat. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and pets.

Dosage:

The recommended initial dose of Maxalt tablet is either 5 mg or 10 mg for the acute treatment of migraines in adults.

Overdose:

It is advised not to exceed the dose of 30 mg of Maxalt in a day, and never consume more tablets at a time than what your physician has approved. If you believe an overdose of this medication, get in touch with poison control center or an emergency room without delay.

Missed dose:

Since you are supposed to take this medication only when you're experiencing a migraine headache, skipping out a dose must not be a concern.

Side effects:

Inform your physician if you are undergoing any of the following common side effects including dry mouth, increased fatigue, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, pain or tight feeling in chest, jaw or neck and feelings of tingling, burning or stabling in toes or fingertips.

Safety measures:

  • Try to limit the intake of liquor while taking Maxalt tablet as it can cause sensation of dizziness, headache, nausea or dry mouth.
  • Do not use this medication if you are allergic to Generic Rizatriptan or any other ingredients in it.
  • The use of Maxalt is also not safe in case of blood circulation problems (for instance, in your legs, hands, stomach or arms).
  • Also never consume grapefruit juice along with this medicine.
